Camshaft mounting advice
- When installing a camshaft, always use new cam followers or tappets, sliders and pads.
- When assembled, protect the cams and cam followers from running dry during start-up. Use Molykote grease (MoS2) for this purpose. If necessary, lubricate with oil during start-up.
Ensure that the hydraulic tappets/positioners have one to two hours to set, or press them empty before assembly.
Ensure that sufficient oil pressure develops when the engine is started. Insufficient lubrication may cause your camshaft to be damaged again. When doing so, also do not forget to clean the oil screen and sump pan and, if necessary, measure the oil pressure first.
A fouled crankcase ventilation or malfunctioning EGR valve can cause severe engine oil contamination, resulting in accelerated camshaft wear and dilution of engine oil by fuel or water.
- Make sure the other components (valve springs, etc.) are in excellent condition.
- Always assure yourself that you have the right components and that all components are properly adjusted (correct valve clearance, correct operation of hydraulic tappets, etc.).
- Observe the correct tightening torques of the bolts.
- Change the engine oil and oil filter. This will prevent any metal residue in the oil from causing new damage.
